About

The Aveland History Group was set up in February 2020 at a highly successful Open Day in Aslackby Village Hall

Even today no village can stand alone. We are ever dependant on our neighbours for facilities and services.

A HISTORY GROUP FOR THE VILLAGES AND TOWN OF THE ANCIENT AVELAND WAPENTAKE

For several years now I have been a member of two village local history groups. I appreciate how difficult it is to keep these groups going. The organisation falls on a few and the turnout, to even the best talks and meetings, can be erratic.

However, there are people in all our villages who are interested, and passionate about our phenomenal local history. Not surprising, we have an impressive amount!

To make for a more sustainable group, I believe we need to involve a larger area. That is where the Wapentake comes in. It’s an area that covers Dembleby, Osbournby and Swaton in the north, Pickworth, Kirkby Underwood and Hanthorpe in the West, Bourne in the south, and Dyke to Bridge End in the East. It’s an area that was autonomous in Danelaw and its villages have been continuously connected ever since.

I appreciate there are some people who are interested only in their immediate environment, whilst others enjoy researching broader topics, but I believe as a wider group we can cater for all.

The Aveland History Groups first intention is to hold a number of historical talks yearly, at venues rotated amongst the villages.

The second is to facilitate an informal get together of likeminded people every couple of months in a local venue to discuss history topics and to share knowledge, perhaps helping with research, or just as a “show and tell”.

The third, and more long-term aim – with help from Heritage Lincolnshire – would be to record, archive, and protect the wealth of local history material at risk of being lost forever.

If you may be interested in joining the group, please express your interest on the forms provided. Any personal information given will be used solely for the purposes of contact by The Aveland History Group.
